A Loving Homage
As part of our Heritage Lottery Funded project focusing on the history of allotments in Tolworth and Surbiton, students from Kingston University's MA in Architecture have completed their loving recreation of our favourite shed on our Tolworth allotment site. In years gone by it used to be the highest pride to spend no money on building your shed, to make it from scratch from found and acquired items. This meant each shed was unique and a piece of art in its own right. The advent of flatpack furniture eventually made it's way to sheds meaning a real loss in unique and beautiful personal creations. This recreation created by the students is a homage to one of these individually crafted practical and alluring buildings. In the near future the Shed will go on tour to the main square of the V&A, the Garden Museum and around Kingston borough filled with an exhibition of oral histories and research collected throughout the project.
